Classical surgery
Flamourakis Manthos, MD, MSc. General Surgeon - Heraklion Crete
Despite the significant progress of laparoscopic surgery, classical (open) surgery remains necessary and irreplaceable in many cases. It is mainly applied when immediate and extensive access to the affected area is required, in cases of severe inflammation, anatomical peculiarities or complex surgical cases.
Experience, proper preoperative evaluation and meticulous surgical planning ensure the safe and effective performance of these procedures, aiming at the best possible therapeutic treatment for each patient.
Classical procedures performed
Colorectal and Rectal Diseases
The open surgical approach is applied in cases where wider surgical access and direct control of the affected area are required.
Particularly indicated in:
• Advanced inflammation
• Abscesses
• Extensive neoplasms
• Intestinal obstructions
• Complex surgical procedures requiring greater access
The classic technique allows direct visual control and safe management of complex surgical situations.
Anal Diseases
Diseases of the anal region are particularly common and can cause significant discomfort to the patient. With the use of appropriate surgical techniques, diseases such as:
• Hemorrhoids (classical techniques and specialized methods)
• Anal fissures
• Perianal fistulas
• Coccyx cyst (hair cyst)
The selection of the appropriate technique is based on the type and severity of the disease, with the aim of rapid healing and substantial relief from symptoms.
Surgical Oncology
Classical oncological surgery is applied in cases where extensive surgical intervention and full access to the affected area are required.
It is mainly indicated when:
• Extensive lymph node dissection
• Complete access to the tumor
• Treatment of large or invasive tumors
Careful preoperative assessment and proper planning of the operation are key factors for the successful treatment of oncological cases.
